Let’s discuss rest days with Bowmar Nutrition:

What is a rest day?

A rest day is pretty much a break day away from the gym, but this doesn’t mean you can’t do any physical activities that day. It’s more of a rest from the heavy lifting and intense cardio/workouts. You can still go on a walk, get outside and even do some light exercising or you can just sit and read your favorite book. We at Bowmar Nutrition want to encourage you that whatever you do, make sure to rest your muscles on this day. 


What are the benefits of a rest day?

One of the biggest benefits is that it allows your muscles to recover and grow the way they need to. It can reduce injury and overworked joints and muscles, which is very important for a weightlifter. Bowmar Nutrition believes rest days can even improve your performance when you get back in the gym and make you more excited and motivated to get back at it! Your body needs time to recover to maintain good health and fitness. Your muscles will grow much quicker by letting them recover, which is why you should switch off the muscle groups you are training each day to ensure your muscles get the recovery and rest they need before working them out again. Taking time to recover is especially important in the beginning of your fitness journey, as your muscles are not used to so much heavy work. 


Bowmar Nutrition’s tips for a rest day:

Stay extra hydrated. Your muscles will love you for it! Make sure you are eating good foods to fuel the muscles you have been working out all week. Bowmar Nutrition also recommends you try stretching and using a foam roller on your rest days to relieve soreness and prep your body for the next week. Get some good sleep. This is important for your overall health and recovery. You can also plan out your workouts for the next week, which will keep you productive and rested as well.


Overall, rest days are so important for everyone that exercises, both mentally and physically! If you do not have a regular rest day in your current routine, try to add one into your schedule and see how much of a difference it makes for you. Like we said above this does not mean you should do absolutely NOTHING all day, but go easy on yourself and take a walk, bike ride, etc. Make sure you are taking great care of yourself!
