The 30 minutes that set up tomorrow
Practice ends, the bus is loading, and dinner is still hours away. What an athlete does in that gap shapes how they feel at the next practice.
A good recovery shake is the easiest win. It is fast, it travels in a shaker, and it gets protein in while you are still in the locker room. Here is what to put in it, plus four recipes that taste like a treat.
What a recovery shake needs
A solid post practice shake covers three things:
- Protein to support muscle repair. Most athletes aim for about 20 to 30 grams after training.
- Carbs to refill the energy used at practice. Fruit, oats, milk or honey all work.
- Fluid to rehydrate. Milk or water as the base counts toward your daily total.
PHC and Whey make the protein part easy. Add a fruit and a liquid and you are done.
4 recovery shakes to try this week
Each makes one shake. Blend with a handful of ice, or shake if you are on the go.
1. Mint Chip Cooldown
1 scoop Whey Mint Chocolate Chip, 1 frozen banana, 10 oz milk, small handful of spinach (you will not taste it).
2. Peanut Butter Cup
1 scoop PHC chocolate, 1 tbsp peanut butter, 1/2 banana, 10 oz milk.
3. Mint Cookie Double
1 scoop PHC chocolate, 1/2 scoop Whey Mint Chocolate Chip, 1/4 cup oats, 10 oz milk. Tastes like a chocolate mint cookie.
4. Berry Bounce Back
1 scoop PHC vanilla, 1 cup frozen mixed berries, 1/2 cup Greek yogurt, 8 oz water or milk.
Shaker only? Mix the powder with cold milk and eat the banana on the side.
Timing and tips
- Drink it within an hour. Sooner is easier: pack the powder in your shaker before you leave for practice.
- Keep it cold. Freeze your milk or water bottle the night before so it is chilled after practice.
- Follow with a real meal. The shake bridges the gap; dinner finishes the job.
- Be consistent. Recovery adds up across a season, not in one shake.

FAQ
PHC or Whey: which should I use? Both work after practice. Many athletes keep one for recovery and one for breakfast or snacks, or mix them like the Mint Cookie Double.
Can I drink a shake if I am lactose sensitive? Use water or a lactose free milk as the base, and check the label for the protein that suits you best.
Is one shake a day enough? For most athletes, one shake after training plus regular meals covers it. Ask your coach or athletic trainer about your needs.
